Folding cartons · Packaging buyer’s guide
Paperboard selection involves more than choosing a thickness. The finished carton must fit the product, fold cleanly, accept the intended decoration, and work through the packing process.

The short answer
Caliper is a thickness measurement, not a complete strength specification. Board grade, structure, scoring, and the product load all contribute to performance. Compare samples built from the proposed production board and record that specification for repeats.
What to review before approving production
Compare structural samples using the proposed board rather than approving only a white mockup made from a different stock. Record the board specification and the conditions under which the packed carton will be handled. Discuss substitutions before they enter a repeat order.
